A teen who authored, drew illustrations for, and laid out a cookbook highlighting her family’s recipes shared her elation and astonishment after it gained widespread attention online.
Isabelle, who preferred not to disclose her last name and hails from London, goes to an International Baccalaureate school located in the Netherlands.
As part of a personal initiative for an assigned project, the 16-year-old individual, with roots tracing back to both England and Spain, chose to honor her lineage by penning and drawing illustrations of cherished dishes within her family. This collective work forms a cookbook titled "A Flavor of Heritage."
Between March 2024 and February, during her 15th year, she mapped out the recipes she intended to incorporate and made a list of all necessary ingredients. She then created original drawings and paintings of various dishes, such as her Spanish great-aunt’s paella, her Spanish grandfather’s empanadas, and her English grandfather’s cottage pie.
Inspired by the watercolor depictions of cuisine she found online, she created her drawings and experimented with different painting methods until she finalized an approach that best captured the essence of the components.
"I learned to cook from an early age due to my Spanish heritage, as it is closely tied to our culture," Isabelle stated to the PA news agency.
My favorite recipes to both savor and depict through drawing and painting are the Spanish ones, thanks to their vibrant hues.
The empanada recipe holds a special place in my heart – every time I visit Spain, my grandfather and I prepare them together.
The paella dish turned out to be the most enjoyable to draw and paint due to its vibrant and intriguing selection of seafood. I had a great time exploring various painting methods and color combinations.
She mentioned that her family felt "highly emotional" upon seeing the completed project, and she also shared that she was "surprised," as it turned out even better than expected.
“Islabelle mentioned that everyone is pleading for a copy," she said.
My mother is also a writer, so it was incredibly special to share this experience with her.
Natali Simmonds, who is 46 years old and Isabelle’s mother, mentioned that her father works as a graphic designer, which means creativity flows through their family veins.
“I come from a lineage of creatives since my dad works as a graphic designer and his own father was an artist. It held great significance for me when my father had the chance to witness her painting, sketching, and designing the book," explained the thriller author.
It's wonderful that she has her own published work to reflect upon as her creative journey progresses.
Earlier this year, Ms. Simmonds shared something from her daughter's project on X, where it garnered more than five hundred thousand views and countless likes.
Many individuals also chimed in, expressing their amazement at the book and inquiring about purchasing a copy of Isabelle’s craftsmanship.
"I wasn't anticipating that kind of response," Isabelle stated.
I tend to be very self-critical with my work, so I felt I could have performed better. However, I'm pleased to realize that all the hard work paid off and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
I wouldn’t mind creating a more impersonal version for sale. I genuinely enjoyed the process, so I’d happily undertake it again once I have the available time.
Isabelle mentioned that her passion for design started when she was eight years old, and even at such a tender age, she began exploring potential universities she might want to apply to in the future.
She mentioned that finishing the project "broadened her perspective" regarding the opportunities a career in design could provide. She intends to pursue studies in art and product design as two of her A-level subjects starting this September at a sixth form college in London.
